thanks!  I thought of the brute force method, but it takes a while to 
write that out (it's an NFS mount), and I wasn't particularly happy 
about wasting the space.

I'll be offline all of today, but I'll try your other suggestions and/or 
new code as soon as I get a chance.  Thanks for your prompt attention!
