I believe there exists a DGT board-driver program for Linux, which
disguises as a chess engine. By running this 'engine' under XBoard as you
would run any other engine, the moves that you would play on the board
would be relayed to XBoard like that engine played them.

So if you would want to use the board to play on FICS, you would set it up
like you would be playing an engine on FICS ('zippy mode'), and if you
want to play against an engine you would set up a match between two
engines, one of which is the board driver.

The driver is called 'dgtdrv', see http://dgtdrv.sourceforge.net/ . I have
no experience with it, as I don't own a DGT board.
