Would it be an idea to use the auto-repeat by having the piece jump back
and forth,
rather than suppress later events?

I found the piece jumping back and forth very disturbing. It could take longer time to make 2 animated moves, than the time between the repeat sequences. That meant that even after release of the the key, the piece would continue to go back and forth for some time while emptying the event buffer.

sequence of events
is in Xt on auto-repeat. In Windows there would be one key-down event,
one or more
char events, and finally a key-up event. The key-down event could be
used to set a
flag and call Forward, the char events could then be used to call either
Forward or
Backward depending on the state of the flag, before toggling the latter.

I X you will always have have same number of key press and key release events. If a key is repeating you will find matching key press and key release events with the same timestamp.
