Although timeseal is closed source, I have an old copy of the source under an
informal NDA. I took a look at it tonight, and this is definitely a bug in
timeseal. In short, if you try to send a character greater than 0x7f through
timeseal, it corrupts the encrypted data and the FICS server closes your
connection because it got something that it can't decrypt.
It would require changes on both the timeseal side and the server side to be
able to accept characters outside the 7-bit range. I'll talk to the FICS
people about getting a timeseal that throws away those characters instead of
barfing on them, though.
