xboard is a chess GUI. By default it acts as a GUI for GNU Chess, and
it expects the GNU Chess program to be named "gnuchessx". (That's
correct for GNU Chess 4, but for GNU Chess 5 the correct command is
"gnuchess xboard". Some distros work around this by installing GNU
Chess 5 as gnuchessx, while some change the default before compiling
xboard.) I don't know exactly what Debian does, but apparently they
didn't change the default and you don't have a program named gnuchessx
installed on your system.

Please read "man xboard" to find out what command line options to give
to make it do what you want.
