In the wget ChangeLog I see:

And that was in version 1.13.3   ;-)

And I can assure you that it works again, I was also one of the people  
who were using it and missed it when it disappeared ( I use  
--with-ssl=openssl --with-libssl-prefix=/usr/local now ).
