A warning (understood as something non-fatal) doesn't help you.
It merely tells you that the harm is done.

An error is not something to be taken lightly.  It is very common to use
tar(1) in various scripts.  Some of these scripts may not use 'standard'
filenames, e.g. because of writing a temporary file.  Changing
the behavior today would break all these scripts.

Let's add that some of these scripts may be obscure pieces of shell
script with no error handling, running 'forever' while being long
forgotten, this could lead to completely unpredictable damage.
