Joerg Sonnenberger added that feature a few years ago.

That version is pretty old (Feb 2009); the current stable version is 2.8.4.

> $ bsdtar -v -v -S -x -f test_gnu.tar
> x 2mb_zero.bin: Write request too large

I just checked and this bug doesn't seem to occur in
2.7, 2.8, or the current development trunk.
