The test suite for bsdtar is designed to be run against different implementations. It has quite a bit of bsdtar-specific knowledge at the moment, but it shouldn't be much work to modify it to be more agnostic. Which version of CMake were you testing? CMake recently switched their TAR implementation to use libarchive (the same library used by bsdtar); I'd be very interested in you found problems in the libarchive-based implementation. Cheers, Tim
