[Bug-tar] [1.19]: build failure on solaris 2.8

Hi, I tried to ./configure && make tar-1.19 on solaris-2.8 with gcc-2.4.3, but found lib/strerror.c would not compile without manually #defining CHAR_BIT to 8 in config.h (I found the definition in /usr/include/iso/limits_iso.h).  It built and ran fine after that.

See the attached output from configure and make.  Let me know if you need more info.
