[Bug-tar] compare problems with truncated filenames

Hi,

I use tar (GNU tar) 1.15.90 to do my backup to a HP autoloader tape device, 
using multi-volumes on a SuSE Linux 10.0 box.

Writing the backup spans over 5 tapes and seems to work fine.
At the end of tape 1, I got one warning: 

/usr/local/bin/tar: 
lvm-snapshot/snapshots/joergli/hourly.0/joergli/lvm-snapshot/vollmer/ba/wi.wu-wien.ac.at/wi-folien/kap_01/pdf/kap01_pdf.zip:
 
file name too long to be stored in a GNU multivolume header, truncated

After writing the backup I compare it, and here the run into problems. After 
loading tape 2 I got the following message:

/usr/local/bin/tar: 
`lvm-snapshot/snapshots/joergli/hourly.0/joergli/lvm-snapshot/vollmer/ba/wi.wu-wien.ac.at/wi-folien/kap_01/pdf/kap01_pdf.zip'
 
is not continued on this volume

clearly, the filename was truncated before. 

Due to that message, tar initiates to load the next tape, where the same 
message occurs, etc. It seems that tar does not compare the second, 
third, ... tape.

What can be done? Do you need more information?
