However, emailing to that address doesn't get through unless you subscribe
to the mailing list
That is not the case, as far as I can see, unless the configuration was
just changed. What is true is that the first time a new address posts
to the list, it has to be held for a human to review and approve, to
avoid the usual flood of spam. We try to make this happen within 24
hours, occasionally longer, usually shorter.
I guess it would be the same for other GNU tools as well.
All GNU packages should accept bug reports by email, without requiring
subscription to the mailing list.
