It might have been that there wasn't enough room. I'm not very good at
these things, so I chanced a bit, and now the partition is gone. :-P I
re-mounted the file system (which was the only (root) file system) in
read-only mode, ran parted as in the original e-mail. The partition was
8.4 Gb, and after the resise, which made it 4 Gb and 100% full according
to df (but still some root-reserved bytes left it seemed), and a re-boot,
there was a lot of file system errors, forcing me to run e2fsck manually.
That done, on the next reboot, GRUB wouldn't detect the ext3 partition on
the next boot. So I zapped it, so there's not much available for a
post-mortem. :-(
Although I have no idea what I did, I assume it was, at least partly, my
own fault.
