Creating linux-swap parititions?

After determining that there was nothing wrong with my disk I'm
wondering if I'm not quite understanding the process of creating a
linux-swap partition.
I created a 6G extended partition and then issued the parted command:
mkpartfs logical linux-swap 2000 2128
and the system has been spinning continuously for past 5-10 minutes
without any error messages and I had to CTRL-Z out of the process.
I don't really need this partition, I was simply attempted to create one
for the heck of it. But I would suspect that if chose to move my present
linux swap from the primary to the secondary drive I would first have to
create the linux-swap partition in order to move it(?).
I am able to create logical ext2 partitions just fine, but no can do on
a linux-swap. Is this expected?
regards,
Karl
