Gabriele Balducci reported this a couple of hours ago (with a suggested
fix). I'll see if I can finish resolving this today.

what I saw from the previous message was that I'd overlooked a case
where I have to force re-evaluation of a shell variable.
(didn't notice here, since I have TERMINFO and TERMINFO_DIRS set most
of the time).
