The following works fine with ncurses 5.7, when using a proper font in
xterm:
LANG=ja_JP alsamixer
With PuTTY, I had to configure it for UTF-8 (there does not seem to be
any other supported encoding with Japanese characters), and using
LANG=ja_JP.utf8 alsamixer
(The Japanese translations are available since alsa-utils 1.0.21.)
