Darwin doesn't come with ncurses, as you note.  Whether ncurses works
well on Darwin - I don't know, myself since I don't have a powerpc, etc.

there are a few people who have gotten ports to work - look in the
NEWS file, with the post-5.2 patches at
        ftp://invisible-island.net/ncurses/5.2
