F1 for help is not best choise for console application as it happens open the help text of the gnome-terminal which I am using.I advise you to use Konsole (KDE) then. It is a bug for any terminal emulation program to intercept keys for its own use. That is not a good advise, it's better you change the help key. Like Ctrl-K H for help as you are cloning joe.
It is the best advice I can give you. :-) I almost never use terminal emulators, and I won't change moe to avoid a bug in one of them. Sorry.
On the other hand, I am not cloning joe. I am writing My Own Editor. I have been inspired by wordstar, the turbo-c editor and joe, but I am not cloning any of them.
Best regards, Antonio.
