Details:
When the makefile is encoded as UTF-8 and includes a BOM
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_order_mark), make will error.
The error reported is non-descriptive, and makes it seem like a tab-space
issue:
Makefile:1: *** missing separator. Stop.
It would be nice if make simply ignored the BOM, or reported an appropriate
error.
