Follow-up Comment #1:

Your problem is you don't want to put backslashes before the parentheses. 
However, obviously any core dump is a bug.

This has already been fixed in the code.  I can't find the exact change right
now, but you can try the current release candidate for GNU make 3.81:

ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/make/make-3.81rc1.tar.gz

This won't dump core, instead it will say:

make: *** No rule to make target `.tif=untitled_%.jpg)', needed by `all'. 
Stop.
