Thanks Simon,

Ok here goes.

After installing Sendmail 8.13.3-5 and not having any problems getting to to
authenticate (for sending) using sasl. However after installing
mailutils-0.6, I found that I cannot get the pop or imap deamons to
authenticate using sasl.

after installing libgsasl1 and libgsasl1-dev (0.11-1) I eventually found that
these were not compiled with gsasl so on recompiling I found that gsasl 0.2.3
was needed so I updated my machine to gsasl 0.2.3 . I packaged the 0.2.3
tarball and installed it according to debians' tools (debuild and such).

running saslauthd in debug mode reveals that the pop or imap deamons are not
attempting to use sasl.

examination of the mailutils code by another programmer SEEMS to indicate that
sasl is not being registered as an authentication mechanism.

Any Suggestions?

Thank You
Fred
