Woah Nellie! I just had a look at this, and we're not really
comparing mbox to Maildir, we're comparing Courier IMAP to
UW-IMAP.
I've yet to meet a sysadmin who's managed a UW-IMAP server who
did not also think that its performance sucked. I don't think
this has anything to do with mbox vs. Maildir, but entirely to
do with UW's implementation. If I felt like digging through the
archives of mutt-users, I could post benchmarks that paint a
very different picture.
