Interesting.  My idea of core extents comes to mind:

As mentioned in my previous email, i'm currently working on rewriting
self-alignment-interface, and one of the things i'm going to implement
is being able to align on specific extents.  If you'd like to help
move this forward by reviewing my patches, that would be most welcome!

Please ignore previous patchsets.  Also, it's best to view the changes
in a branch dev/janek-alignment (you can see each commit separately,
and this makes it easier to understand logical steps in changes -
Rietveld squashes everything together).
