Thanks, you're right.

So  at this point, we've declared this bug to be unfixable in 2.14.x.  Not  
formally, but it would seem to be a waste of resources to fix this with an  
alternate fix already in 2.15.

So I'll mark it with syntax_change, which means it can't be backported.
