I agree that this is an obstacle, but it's one that's explained in
LM 2 tutorial, and easily worked-around by adding \new Voice
before the \relative.
I'm definitely interested in proposing that \relative c' { should
automatically start a \new Voice if there isn't one already, but
let's wait until GLISS.
