GNU Mach is currently the only microkernel which is supported by the Hurd.
That is: If you want to run Hurd, you need Mach. That may change, but so far
it hasn't.

There are some problems with Mach which seem very hard or even impossible to
fix without using a new microkernel. For that reason, we are looking at other
microkernels. We were planning to use L4, but it seems it will be something
else (either a successor of L4, or Coyotos, yet another microkernel).
For more information and discussion on this, see the l4-hurd list and its
archives.
