I tried a few example programs (included in the readline package) and run
them directly on the vcs, and it worked, after diddling the terminal state
it couldn't read directly from stdin of course (I had to set
readline_echoing_p to see what I type).

So it seems quite feasible to use readline for the job.  I sent off a mail
to bash-maintainers explaining the situation and asking them for their
advice, and will look into the details of term.
