Why is this amazing? Why do you expect any particular size for a
compressed file?
The amount of compression, and hence the size of a compressed file,
depend on the contents of the file. With my weak psychic powers, I know
nothing about the contents of your files.
As usual, a problem report which includes some basic information on
the computer system involved, the actual commands used, and their actual
output, would be more useful than only vague descriptions and
interpretations.
