For the record, janneke found that this was cause by ‘open-connection’
returning #f; that, in turn, happened due to a bug introduced in Guile
3.0.4:
https://bugs.gnu.org/42060
Guix commit 641631c1a2590acb1778ebb7b3a141beb8e7448b solves this
problem.
