1. Regarding Felix Natter's "static approach", check out this link:

   https://github.com/inaimathi/gtypist-single-space

2. As to the dynamic/on-the-fly approach, it is already implemented
   among other things via gtypist's -w flag. 

From the changelog in /usr/share/doc/gtypist/changelog.gz (debian
stable):

| Version 2.2a:
|   - Added word processing like behaviour to the exercises, so that
|     multiple spaces combine into one, return moves to the next
|     paragraph, space is accepted at the end of a line, and hyphens
|     at a line's end are skipped.

Run "gtypist -w" from the shell prompt if you want to give it a try.
