Now I've got a fix which works for me, see the patch attached here:
  https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?38839

Just in case you have a 2.9.x source around and know how to build it:
You should be able to apply this patch by using:
  patch -p1 < fix-for-alt-key-aborts-lesson.diff
in the gtypist source directory.
