Hi Mike,

Thanks for writing. It is nice to see interest in the project.
Let me expand a bit on Brian's reply ...

one would create a running, self-hosted system.

You don't. An installable/running/self-hosted system is a whole
different beast.

Its purpose is to allow interested people to install the latest GNU
packages, *unaltered from the original GNU releases*, in a separate
directory from their system tools. Say, /usr/local/gnu. And then put
/usr/local/gnu/bin in PATH before the system directories.

We realize that's of rather less interest than a running self-hosted
system, but it is the best we've been able to come up with to have a
unified "GNU" collection that tries to put as much as possible of our
software ("ours" includes yours too :) together. Hopefully raising some
awareness about what GNU is. Of course, lacking a kernel, only so much
can be done.

and then delete my distro's programs,

I would most strongly recommend against doing that, ever! What's in
gsrc is not anywhere close to a complete, usable, system. Aside from
the kernel and libc, there are many basic system utilities and expected
programs not covered by gsrc.

Is there a document somewhere that describes this?

The gsrc documentation and web page could use some massaging, no
question. Been on my list too long, as well as working with Brian's
test release.

Thanks,
Karl
