Hi Patrick,

I did a quick google search and didn't find much to support (a) so I
wonder which directive in configure.ac is causing these problems.

I don't think it's (b) directly. The error comes from the macro
AC_PROG_CC
which seems harmless to me. Either a bug i Autoconf or if one is supposed to invoke ./configure is dome different way. I cannot tell and it's probably a better to check with autoconf folks.

One way to find out would be to make a barebones configure.ac, generate
a configure, and run it. Then add back in directives until you reproduce
that error with the __arm__ define. That at least would tell us what is
causing that problem so we can talk to the autoconf people about it. It
looks like the last autoconf release was april 2012 so I don't know if
its even being developed any more.

I think I'll have some time later tonight to whip up a small configure.ac/configure that I hope Jeff can confirm causes the same problem.

Cheers,
Peter
