I didn't change anything from the defaults, so I presume it picked up CC
either from my path or the fact that I had setenv CC /opt/SUNWspro/bin/CC.
On #2, I never ran make check after I got through the compile - got
distracted with something else and by the time I got back your note was
there and I realized cc was needed so ran make distclean instead.

Did the configure script pick CC by default instead of cc or did you specify
it manually?

Normally only cc should be used to compile GSL, but just out of curiousity,
if you successfully compiled all of GSL with CC did it actually pass "make
