Follow-up Comment #2, bug #38095 (project grub): What's unrealistic is the size/complexity increase from grub to grub2 and the poor failure mechanisms of grub2. Having grub2 fall back to looking at the mbr's of the disks installed and perhaps the partitions therein can't be that difficult. All the framework is already there. It would certainly make recovery of a confused system much easier for most users if grub2 behaved this way.
