Details:
On my Dell XPS 8300, when I boot into Grub 2.00~beta5, hit "c" to go to
command line, and enter "halt", Grub freezes. It does not shutdown on its own,
and I have to hit the power button. Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing at the freeze.
The underscore that shows where you are typing goes down to the next line, but
it gets stuck there, so it looks like this:
grub> halt
_
This is not a duplicate of #35550 because in #35550 an error was printed to
the screen, whereas in this bug, no error is printed to the screen.
>From this it can be concluded that Grub has completely ceased execution (which
is consistent with Ctrl+Alt+Del not doing anything), even though the hardware
hasn't.
This conclusion was gotten to by Jordan Uggla. If you wish to follow this
logic, it is here:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/help-grub/2012-06/msg00003.html .
This bug can be reproduced every single time..._on_my_hardware_. Although this
is 100% reproducable, it is hardware-specific.
I know the bug happens on a Dell XPS 8300. I believe I remember the bug also
happening on my MacBook, but that was before Grub 2.00~beta5, and I'll have to
re-check that with the newer version and backup a potentially wrong memory (as
in brain memory, lol).
Another variable to consider is how Grub is compiled. In the case of my Dell
XPS 8300, I am running Grub compiled for BIOS, whereas on the MacBook, I am
running Grub compiled for 64-bit EFI. Going off a more recent memory, on my
Dell XPS 8300, when I get this bug, the Grub I used was compiled with
"./configure --disable-werror --enable-cache-stats --enable-efiemu". I might
be spelling the cache stats option wrong, but it was the option where it
allows Grub to see some kind of stat of the hard drive cache, if I remember
right. I used the same installation of Grub (thus compiled the same) on the
other two hardwares I'm about to mention (it's on a USB external hard drive; I
just went from one hardware to another with the same drive seeing which
hardware would have the bug - including QEMU. To boot the USB drive in QEMU, I
ran QEMU as root and made -hda be /dev/sd[X] where /dev/sd[X] is the
abstraction file for the entire USB drive.).
I know that the bug did not happen on my Dell Inspiron E1705. Also, the bug
did not happen in QEMU 1.0,1. (yes, that's supposed to be a comma-one, not a
period-one. It's how QEMU does their versioning, period, then comma.) In qemu
I was running it with --enable-kvm on a 64-bit machine with VT-x. I was also
using -vga std, -m 3000, -smp 4. I obtained this qemu through the Arch
repositories via "sudo pacman -S qemu". Note, the name of the executable
program is "qemu-system-x86_64", not simply "qemu" as it was for me in Mint
from apt-get.
On all three hardwares (Dell XPS 8300, QEMU 1.0,1, and Dell Inspiron E1705) I
was booting Grub off the same drive, my Western Digital My Book Elite, which
is USB 2.0 and has a capacity of 930.9 GiB. I have it GPT-schemed, so Grub is
in the protective MBR's boot code area as well as in a BIOS BOOT partition.
Here is some hardware information obtained by lshw below. I cropped out my
external hard drive (which has 17 partitions) as well as an 8-partition thumb
drive. This would be heavy-duty spam had I not cropped (each partition gets
its own paragraph).
For the Dell XPS 8300 (the hardware that has the bug):
