Grub config files

I don't have a bug report, but I do have some feedback about grub.  I
think it's really great that improvements have been made and it supports
many more features, file systems, etc.  But I hate it.  I started on
Slackware 15 years ago with LILO as a boot loader and loved it.  I even
loved the original GRUB.  It was quick and easy.  I really HATE the new
grub.  

In the past, when I wanted to remove partitions I did not want to see in
the menu, it was a simple matter of modifying one single config file and
it stayed that way forever through numerous upgrades.  

Now, every time I get an upgrade, I have to go back through all those
annoying files in /etc/grub.d and redo changes I have already made.
There is probably a few options I can modify to make it stay the way I
want it, but it's just a boot loader, I dont want to have to spend 2
hours reading man pages to figure out the structure of all the 00_ 05_
etc files.  QUick simple easy and it works like I have come to expect
from Linux is what I want.

If I remove a partition from the boot menu such as my laptop
manufacturers factory restore partition, changing Windows 7 to WINDOZE
or removing that useless memtest stuff, I expect it to STAY THAT WAY.  I
am fine with new kernels adding themselves to the top of my boot menu,
but I am not ok with having to go back and comment out partitions I have
already removed 3 or 4 times in the past.

As soon as I get some spare time, I will be removing this version of
grub and going back to Lilo or the original GRUB on all of my linux
machines.
