Update with the current version from debian-experimental. It appears to 
succeed with /dev/sda, but not with /dev/md0.

I forgot to mention that the software raid device is RAID 1 and is 
degraded. I don't know if that is relevant. Also, the system is Debian 
squeeze.

In any case. the upshot of this is that the system still won't boot, as 
grub can't find the newdebian volume group. Maybe software raid didn't 
initialize correctly.

Let me know if you want further information. Maybe the grub config?
