Details:

I have a Kubuntu 9.10 (karmic) system using grub2 and a custom kernel without
an initramfs. I just recently updated grub2 to a version which was checked out
of the source repository on 20090725. The ubuntu version number is
1.96+20090725-1ubuntu1. After the update, grub will no longer boot my kernel.
Instead, it just displays the size and location of the kernel in Hex and
hardlocks the PC. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work; I must use the power switch to
disable the PC. The stock ubuntu kernel is booted properly, and reverting to
the next-to-latest grub version brings back the capability to boot the custom
kernel. This behavior has been reproduced using QEMU by Robert Millan on the
Ubuntu Launchpad. You can download the kernel here:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/29830757/linux-image-2.6.31-rc5-zen0_2.6.31-rc5-zen0-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb.
Be careful though, because it is optimized for my computer and may not have
the drivers to boot yours.
