Thanks for the Supergrub suggestion.  I've gone to the website to check it out.

As far as my copying boot files from one partition to another and modifying 
grub.conf to use them,
it indeed does not work so far.  However, my goal is to have Linux 
distributions #1's boot files
on /dev/sda1 and Linux distribution #2's boot files on /dev/sda2, and the 
copying was consistent
with that goal.  I just haven't figured out the rest of the puzzle to make 
everything boot with
that setup.
