If you want to port GRUB to other architectures, please have a look at
PUPA:

http://www.nongnu.org/pupa/

I'm not sure if the port you were talking about was a port to another
pc (like IA64) or to a complete other architecture.  In the case of
IA64 support or something alike I am not sure what you will have to
do (I'm no GRUB hacker).
