The question is that the FSF requires contributors to assign copyright to
them, so that the FSF can defend GRUB in case of legal trouble (for example,
a GPL violation)

In order to get your patch merged, both of you would have to sign copyright
assignment papers for the FSF.

Okuji, the GRUB maintainer, knows the details. I'm CCing him.
