Have you by chance tried to boot from grub-boot-floppy as well ? - I
found this to be one of the best features of grub. (If you wanted, info
grub - installation - creating a GRUB boot floppy gives the details.
Takes two minutes. Use this floppy for the recovery of any boot - end
of advertisement !).
Insert this floppy, reboot, and grub > should come up.
>From here you can try all those steps from grub.conf and anything else
manually, plus re-install grub to the Master Boot Record with ease.
