Generaly speaking, the CDROM won't appear for GRUB. The only case where
the CROM (partially) appears is when booting from the CROM (El Torito
stuff). The image on the CD appears as (fd0) (if it is a floppy
emulation), or (hd0) (if it is a hard disk emulation). These are fake
CHS devices, and you won't have an immediate access to the whole device
(which is useless as long as we do not support Iso9660 filesystem).

It might be, with some BIOSes --- but this is definitively NOT mandatory
--- that when having a booting sequence beginning with the CDROM AND an
El Torito CDROM is in the drive AND you decide to boot normally, that
the BIOS presents the emulation as (fd1) or as the last drive (hd1 if
there is only one disk).

But, in general, if you don't boot from the CDROM, this device doesn't
appear.
