No, the final test was on the system itself where I installed grub on the
system with only the CF in it (the system can't have a real HD anyway).

The CF is the only "disk" in that system.

(I first tried to prepare the whole thing in another system, which
worked fine for LILO, but after that failed for GRUB, I now first
want to get it running directly on the target system.)
