Why can't my grandma try out GNU/Linux without needing to know what
"boot" or "partition" means?  Why do I have to tell her "but be
careful when you upgrade to Win XP"?

Installing Linux doesn't defeat Windows.  (Well, for the distro I use,
it doesn't... it automagically gets a boot menu item)

Then we've just lost 90% of windows users (who are waiting for their
freedom!), who are too scared to "do their homework".
Computer science is our job, not their's.

Sure, there are plenty of unsolvable problems, but this isn't one of them.
