Hello there bug-grub readers,

Looking at the grub-install script,
it appears that Compaq array controllers
don't work right with this script on linux.
(device files match /dev/cciss/* and /dev/ida/*
for cciss and cpqarray drivers, and do not match
/dev/hd* or /dev/sd*, which the script appears
to expect)

The documentation says, "this procedure is definitely deprecated"
in the section on using grub-install. Does that mean the script
is deprecated, or the documentation is deprecated?

Does that mean nobody is maintaining grub-install
and I shouldn't bother trying to fix it?

I can successfully use grub directly, but the documentation has
this to say about doing that:

Note that grub-install is actually just a shell script
and the real task is done by the grub shell grub
(see section Invoking the grub shell). Therefore,
you may run grub directly to install GRUB, without
using grub-install. Don't do that, however, unless
you are very familiar with the internals of GRUB.
Installing a boot loader on a running OS may be
        extremely dangerous

I'm willing to try to fix the grub-install script, if
that is what's needed, but if that script is obsolete
and nobody is surprised that it does not work, then
fixing it might not be worth doing.

Thanks,
