I'm not sure, but maybe I can answer some of my own:
-The usual place for stage1.5 is directly after the mbr (track 0 but
 without sector 0 (which is the mbr))
-The sector-list in stage1 and the path/partition in stage1.5 can only
 be changed by the "install" command or the commands which in turn
 call "install" (e.g. "setup").
 An other way to do so requires knowledge of the grub source, I think.

I cant boot with a grub floppy, as the computer does _not_ have a
floppy drive (notebook).

What I'll try now is to install grub with my "helper" computer on a
spare hard disk. From there I copy stage1 and stage1.5 directly from
the disk sectors to "image" files (via "dd"). These files will go to
the notebook disk.
