you should use "setup" in the grub shell, you can use install although
it requires more info:

root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)

the shell also supports tab completion which may help:
so type

root (

then hit tab to see a list of available options

grub comes with a script grub-install which has a function to convert
device names into grub syntax. you can also use this script to do the
install as the name suggests.
