This is because DOS is dumb.

Did you back up your bootsectors? No? Now you know why you should. : )
To boot the partition you need to recreate it's bootsector. No easy task by
hand. Easiest thing to do:
dd the entire partition to a back-up file. Start a reinstall of win to the
partition. After it touches the bootsector you should be able to dd your
entire partition back minus the first sector,a nd all shoudl be well.
